When things get tough, how often we have said, “Oh, to be a child again! No responsibilities ... a mother and dad to make all the decisions and tell us what to do!”
We shouldn’t like it for long, though! We wouldn’t b^ happy as children, being told when to get up and when to go to bed, being punished for our “own good” for talking back. No sir! Today as adults, independence is far more important to us than parental love and discipline could ever be. In a word, we have grown up.
None of us, as individuals, would surrender for a minute our grown-up independence. But sometimes, collectively, as citizens we may feel that the world has become too complex for us. At such times, that magic word “Security” looks awfully good. At 6uch times there is a big temptation to lean on Daddy—on someone bigger than we are—in this case, Government. We feel inclined to say to Government: “Here, you take care of us; we want Security. We will surrender our Independence—just a little teeny bit of it—for Security.”
Of course, as other countries have found out, we can’t surrender just a little teeny bit of our Independence! In this world of nations you are either grown up or you are a child. Your Government is either your hired servant—or it is your boss! It may
