Birth Announcement

Mr. and Mrs. George Knak of Hopewell, have announced the birth of a daughter, Beatrice Estelle, born Saturday, February 4, at the Hopewell hospital. Mrs. Knak was the former Beatrice Johnston of Rappahannock, and has visited relatives in the county quite frequently.

More Pork, Lower Price*

Forecast For This Year

More pork at lower prices is forecast for 1950 by George Herring, animal husbandman, V.P.I.

Herring gives this picture of hog production this year, seven per cent more sows are expected to farrow in the spring of 1950 than in the spring of 1949. Market supplies probably will be 8 per cent higher, and prices several cents per pound lower.

On the favorable side for the hog producer is the- lower cost of feed. - Herring has these tips t# help the producer make hogs pay:

Keep production in line with the feed available on the farm. Going into the hog enterprise heavily when prices are high, then liquidating when prices drop hurts the industry some—but the individual producer more. ,

Use pastures. They cut the feed bill and help keep hogs healthy. Ladino clover is best.

Use productive breeding stock. Select sows from high producing strains. The litter of five pigs barely pays the feed bill, and there’s twice as much profit in litters of eight pigs as in litters of six. Produce the intermediate type hog for market or home use.
