Mr. Beatty of the Beef Cattle Section at the Beltsville Research Center, was hy the office Friday checking, on the location of twin calves reported in Rappahannock. Unfortunately ^none of the three sets of twins known to be in Rappahannock to date are identical, so we are still looking. Identical twin beef type calves are still wanted by the beef cattlemen at Beltsville for feeding tests, so, anyone knowing where such calves may be, are requested to report them to this office.
Increased Forest Fires
Reported For Last Year
More fires—and more acreage burned in 1949 than in 1948— are reported from the offices of State Forester George W-. Dean in Charlottesville.
Last year 1,601 fires burned over 12,131 acres, compared with 1,006 fires and 7,783 acres burned in 1948.
Dean attributes most of the increase to irregular distribution of rainfall, which “while nearly normal for the year, did not occur at times favorable to forest fire prevention.” Increased carelessness on the part of smokers, was responsible for 507 fires, or aboiut 32 per cent of those burning during the year.
The largest single fire was in Louisa county, and burned over 600 acres. The average size of all fires is reported as’ 7.5.
