lie was an American soldier and explorer. He helped to explore parts of the new Louisiana Purchase.
In 1803 he again entered the army and was commissioned second lieutenant.
The next year he and Lewis began their exploring trip westward.
He was later made Indian agent for Upper Louisiana.
He was governor of Missouri Territory between 1813 and 1821.
He was superintendent of Indian affairs at St. Louis from 1822 to his death.
He joined the army at 20 as lieutenant of infantry. He took part in a campaign against Indians under General Wayne in 1794. i
