Public Assistance
Is A Necessity

Up to this time I’ve been talking about Virginia’s sensible public assistance program and the need for enough money to give people the minimum essentials in food, clothing, and other necessities. Taxpayers in general are hard to convince. Looking at it from a purely impersonal viewpoint, we can’t blame them. Digging into one’s pocket hurts, as we well know. But perhaps a better acquaintance with the welfare program will make us more resigned to shelling out our hard earned cash even if we don’t develop any profound convictions about this business of public assistance.
I think there is a real need for more understanding of public as-i sistance on the part of the community. We cannot truly help our clients until they have a feeling ^ of security that comes from the community’s understanding their need for assistance and wanting to help them.
