On Real Estate Taxes

Real estate in Rappahannock county is assessed at approximately one-third of actual value.

The last re-assessment of real f estate .was made over 20 years ago, according to the best information available. There was an equalization board in 1944, composed of J. Rodes Brown, L. R. Hudson, and Will Sutphin. This b'bard tried to correct inequalities in assessment of real estate and to add tracts of land and buildings not assessed. Working 30 days, by their work they added approximately $3800 increase to annual taxes collected in the county.

The Commissioner of Revenue does not change assessment value: . His duty is to add buildings and to make transfers on land books as tracts or parcels of land are sold. A local ordinance requires citizens of Rappahannock to obtain a building permit from the Commissioner of Revenue for any b ilding erected at a cost of more than $500. Unfortunately, this ordinance has not been observed and the Commissioner of Revenue does not have too much powder in enforcing it. Consequently, considerable taxes are
