bulldozer. The ditches are designed in depth and width according to the amount of drainage area that they must drain. To provide good drainage the banks of the ditch must be lower than adjacent areas. High ditch banks brought about by the method of plowing the field and by continuously piling dirt removed from the ditch on the bank, has caused much of the trouble which ultimately results in sw-ampy areas. This condition is common on nearly every farm in Culpeper and Rappahannock counties in varying degrees.

It doesn’t pay to judge by size. Sometimes even a woman’s thumb has a man under it.
