Fifth County Paper
Begins 3rd Year
Rappahannock News marks the beginning of its third year with this edition.
According to W. E. Compton, with the aid of County Clerk, James M. Settle, there have been five newspapers in the county.
The first paper m the county had the same name taken by the present paper. It was Rappahannock News, published in Washington in the same building in which its namesake began publication in 1949. One record says it was published in 1877, but a letter of the late George E. Cary gives the date of 1870.
The second county paper was The Blue Ridge Echo, published for a year, 1878, by Judge W. W. Moffett and Commonwealth Attorney H. G. Moffett.
James M. Settle has found records in the clerk's office of official publications in The Call, but exact dates and identity of this county paper cannot be located. A belief has been expressed that this paper was published outside the county and brought in, rather than being a local printing plant.
The Blue Ridge Guide, published from 1886 to 1936, was established by W. B. Settle, father of Slater Settle, and brother of the late George W. Settle. Mr. W. B. Settle returned to Rappahannock county from a law practice in a western state and was editor of The Blue Ridge Guide until his death.
In 1889, the late George Edward Cary, father of Edward B. (“Jake”) Cary of Washington, acquired ownership of The Blue
