At the cotton gin, which was quite a sizeable outfit, not much could be heard due to the noise of motors and operating machinery. However, I was very pleased to hear one of the Negro workmen being questioned by a northerner about his feeling toward his work, living conditions, local opportunities, etc. Hi3 reply, and I quote: “Lady, I been around and I know what conditions is like elsewhere. I’ve been in Wisconsin, Michigan, Ohio, and Illinois. Why, when I lived in Chicago, a man could walk all day and his feet not even hit the good ole’ ground. Yes, ma’am, I like it here. There are good schools for my kids and we have nice churches and I make good money. If we want to, we folks can keep a cow, and raise our own hogs.”
