Roberts, owner of The Virginia Star at Culpeper, worked for Mr. Green on the Exponent, and nearly all the force at The Virginia Star saw their early newspaper days under Mr. Green’s guidance: Mrs. B. G. Calfee, Claude W. Inskeep, L. H. McAllister, and Douglas Grady.
The publisher of Rappahannock News was chided constantly by her brother, Bruce Bowie, and by Jack Barber because she had not been “started off right” by being trained at The Exponent. They both announced that they were superior because of this training. Finally, the publisher went to the Exponent and asked them to let her work there for a week, just so -she could boast of it. It did no good. Despite the week's work , within the walls of the old paper office and shop, the printers declared that without the fine hand of “The Old Man,” the training was not authentic and,, therefore, valueless.
From the print shop of The Culpeper Exponent have gone the future owners of print shops in Washington, D.C., and several of the city dailies have workmen who received their training under Mr. Green. - ■■ ._
The Exponent, one of tl\e older weeklies in the state, is now published by Raleigh TV Green’s son and daughter, John Buckner Green and Mrs. Erskine Strother (Anne Green). Their mother was the former Miss Lucille Dove, of Rappahannock.
