ONCE UPON A TIME there was a town council and mayor of Washington (all-men). There was not quite as much notice paid to their election asthere was half-a-century later when another mayor and town council was elected (all-ladies). Pictured here is the original town council of the “First Washington of Them All.” Seated in front is J. F. Lillard, sheriff. The three gentlemen seated .(left to right) are Dr. E.‘W. Brown, Dr. T. L. Booton, mayor, and Dr. C. E. Johnson. Standing, (left to right) are H. M. Dudley, James L. Oden, Clarence J. Miller, and French Strother. The town treasurer, Baldwin B. Baggarly was not present when this picture was taken.
