A Musical Program and Mixer sponsored by the Standard Oil Company was held from 7 to 9 o'clock at which the leader and orchestra displayed goed versatility in stunts and music by playing numerous state songs during which the respective agents stood and sang. The singing wasn’t so hot but, believe me, the spirit was there.
The International Harvester Co. was host at breakfast Monday at 6:45 and was followed by a tour Of the I-H plant where we saw tractors, holers, and cotton pick-1 ers being molded and assembled.
At 10 the convention was officially opened by President Edwin Bay of Springfield, 111., who was followed by address of welcome by Mayor Aatkins Overton of Memphis and Robert W. Moore, vice director of Extension Service, University of Tennessee College of Agriculture. Reports of national committeemen follow until recess for lunch. The afternoon was devoted to regional meetings during which final association political issues 'of the association were ironed out. Believe you me, various states had some county agents who were really high-powered Hoss Traders * but Virginia came out pretty well considering her period of activity in getting L. B. Wilkins, county agent of Norfolk, elected director for a two-year term to the National Board of Directors, representing the southern region which includes Virginia, Tennessee, Kentucky, Arkansas, and states thereof. Also, we*>with cohorts of the solid south, were unsuccessful in getting the convention rotated equally among the regions instead of its being held every even year at Chicago. This work was started last year with an ultimate goal of bringing the convention to Virginia in 1955.
The evening program consisted of “A Good Ole-Fashioned Barbecue” by the boys from Texas and Sears Roebuck Foundation, at which 1300 Were served in 30 minutes. The prime beef from Texas was superb and was brought up by check wagon preceeded by the head chef in a yellow 1951-Cadillac convertible. We were greeted by Texas agents exhibiting tengallon-hat-sized hamburgers, containing four pounds of prime beef each. Nobody got sick. The barbecue was followed by a floor show and dancing at the Casino buliding at the Memphis Fair Grounds. >
On Tuesday, the Firestone Tire and Rubber Co. came forth with a nice breakfast and talk by Mr. Firestone himself, which was followed on Wednesday afternoon with a tour of their Memphis plant, the largest in the world, 37 acres under one roof! Here we saw all sizes of auto, truck, and tractor tires and innertubes
