James L. Oden was the town sergeant for the first council of 1694.
Mr. Oden married Miss Sallie B. Cary, of Washington, sister of the late George Cary, for many years editor of The Blue Ridge Guide. For some time he -worked in the store of W. G. Wood. Mr. and Mrs. Oden had one son, Clar-’ ence, who lives with his ^mother in the Oden home on Main street.

John F. Lillard, son of the late William Lillard and Sarah Jane O'Neal Lillard was a native of Rappahannock and spent most of his life here. He lived in Texas for a few years.
Mr. Lillard clerked in the late H. L. 'Menefee’s store for many years, in ^he neighboring town of Sperryville, went from there to Texas and when he returned, clerked in W. M. Stuart's store in Washington.
The Lillard family had been connected with the sheriff’s office for many years, dating back to Mr. Lillard’s grandfather, Absalom Lillard. His father William
