The weekly newspaper is the means of the storekeeper letting the people in the community know what he has to sell. It would be to no advantage for him to run advertisements in™ some large city paper, for it covers so much territory that would not be near him; neither could he afford the high prices of advertising in the big papers. The classified advertisements serve the same purpose for local folks to sell some item which they no longer need but is too good to throw away and may be of use to a neighbor.
When radio and television and the big city newspaper began such “big business,” the prognosticators went to work overtime. They knew the little country weekly was on the way out. They predicted its early. demise. But, as with so many other predictions, 10,€00 country weeklies are still being printed. It is a form of service to the small community that no other medium has been able to perform in quite the same manner. The large metropolitan areas may think that they control the nation, but the voters in the combined small communities have given them a set-back on occasions. The little country paper serves the small community in stating its views—and stating them plainly. The small paper is numerous throughout the nation, and it is read more carefully and thoroughly than its bulky city-sister.
