THE FORESTERS TOOLS — Virginia Forest Service Forester* used the above tools in' their assistance to timberland owners. The diameter tape, tree calipers and Biltmore stick are used to measure tree diameters. The Biltmore stick and abney level are used in measuring tree or log heights. Diameters and tree heights are necessary to accurately estimate timber. The increment borer is used to determine rate of growth and age of trees. The bark gauge measures bark thickness. The marking axe is used to mark trees that are ready for cutting.
