The stole, as it is worn today, evolved from the fur shoulder scarf which was originated in the early 1900’s, j However, the first stole known was an ecclesiastical vest-! ment, narrow at the neck and ! shoulders and becoming wider* at the front. These garments,' usually embroidered and1 fringed, are still worn in the church today. Actually, the - wrap-around shoulder scarf is not exclusively a 20th century fashion. The modern stole resembles the shawl worn j by women throughout his-; tory. Perhaps the only differ*; ence between the two would I be that the stole is used pri- j marily as a decorative acces- j sory, whereas shawls have j been known as more practical garments to be worn as a protection against the ele-' m^ots. !
