Granite Hills of Stage Junction has three Polled Herefords on Test—all have done better than 3 pounds on "feed. Condition at beginning of feed test has a lot to do with growth rate so . . . in the end one must rely on life time growth rate. Some cattlemen may let a calf get thin in between his on-dam record and on-feed performance so he’ll look good on the final test.
Take a close look at all three. First if his on-dam record is desirable you’ll know his dam was a good milker. If his onfeed record is good then he has the ability to keep making rapid gains. H i s lifetime growth rate will show you if his owner attempted to “doctor” the results. Finally still, demand “choice” type or higher .. . you can get both so don’t go overboard for either ; type or growth rate. Both are | needed for optimum net in- ! come.
