The worst year in history was 1941 with 11 IQ deaths and the second worse was 1951 when 999 people were killed. The rate of deaths per 100 million vehicle miles ( of travel in 1941 was 18.3 and in 1951 it was 9.0 The estimated rate for 1962 is 5.5. Deaths for the nation have not yet been fully tabulated but it is a certainty that they will exceed 40,000 for the first time. Rural deaths were up from the 698 to 1962 to 791 and urban ones from 158 to 181. Pedestrian fatalities rose from 157 to 204. Deaths of military personnel, however dropped from 56 to 51. Deaths for 1962 were 116 over the 856 of 1961 and 216 over 756 of 1960. Traffic volumes increased approximately 5 per cent. The 109 deaths during December represented the highest monthly toll since 113 people died in August of 1955. Two other months, September with 100 deaths and October with 102, reached the 100 mark. Fatal crashes, or those killing at least one person each, rose from 727 to 824. Crashes killing more than one person each were up.
