How long has it been since you've taken a few minutes to figure whether or not your family is receiving an adequate diet each day. Each family member needs certain foods to allow for the growth, maintenance and repair of the body. A quick check can be made by following the'll. S. D. A. approved Basic 4 Food check list. The Basic 4 Food Groups are: Milk and Dairy Products Meat and Meat Products, Fruits and Vegetables, and Breads and Whole Grain Cereals. The requirement in the Milk Group is one quart of milk per day or 4 cups. Substitutions may be made by serving ice cream, cheeses, puddings or other milk products. We need two servings daily from the Meat Group. We might occasionally substitute foods in high protein to meet requirements in this group. These would be dried beans and peas, nuts, or eggs* We need 4 servings of fruits and vegetables each day. These should include one serving of green or yellow vegetables and one serving of citrus fruit such as oranges, grapefruits or tomato* To complete the diet we need 4 servings from the bread or whole grain group. Check your families diet against this list. How do they compare? Are they getting enough of the right foods to do their best at school or on the job? If not, it’s your job to plan their meals for proper diet. Let’s all Eat Better in 1963.
