Taylor Hoskins reported today. A total of 44,077 visits were recorded during the three-day weekend, according to Hoskins who said that this was 17.6% above the last comparable weekend in 1960 when visits totaled 37,480. Despite the high visitation, it was below the record set during the July 4 period in 1950, which saw visits totaling 51,819. It is noted that in 1950 the Fourth of July fell on Tuesday, thus many workers took an extra day on Monday, making, in effect, a four-day holiday. Hoskins reported that the naturalist programs instituted at Loft Mountain, Shenandoah's newest campground.
