spirit which sports horns, large staring eyes and crushing jaws. This was a “T’ao T’ieh* which frightened evil spirits from homes and temples.
The Museum says that the Chinese did not consider their dragons enemies as did the Europeans of King Arthur’s day. Instead, Chinese monsters were symbols of protection from evil spirits. They held this place in Chinese life long before the great religious systems of Confucianism, Taoism, and Buddhism. Because these sects adopted the dragon, it has come down through many dynasties to recent times. The youngest dragons in the exhibition are two beasts sewn in thread of wrapped gold, which decorate the front and back of two 18th century “dragon* robes. The local display is sponsored by the Rappahannock Library and the State-wide tour is sponsored by the Virginia Federation of Women’s Clubs. The Artmobile, first of its kind, is a gift of Miller and Rhoads.

The Selective Service Office at Washington will be closed from April 26 through May 7 while the clerk is on leave. Persons wishing register during this time will be registered by Miss Phyllis Hudson ir the Court House Building. The Selective Service Office will be open at 8:30 a.m. on Monday, May 10. Clerk will be at office at 6 a.m. Monday, May 10 for physical examination and induction calls.
