“There is no loinger any doubt. Social securit y benefits are helping to stabilize the income and spending power of many residents in F.appahannock County." Monthly benefits first became payable in January 1940 and they have continued without interruption for years, accompanied by a ste ady growth in the number of beneficiaries. Mrs. Daly noted that as of December 31, 1 964, some 791 Counties were collecting about $448,896.00 annually from social security, an increase of 11 percent over the same date in 1963. More people in Rappahannock County, she said, could draw social security benefits if they knew more about the law, and for that reason they are urged to visit or call the local social security office whenever they have a question concerning their benefits or responsibilities. As of January 1065, in the nation at large, more than 19 million beneficiaries were receiving payments ait the rate of 16 1/4 billion per month. The average monthly old-age retirement benefit in December was $79.42 for all States, while in the State of Virginia the average was $68.73, Mrs. Daly said.
