Misuse of electrical equipment - including home appliances - causes about 21 per cent of all fires, according to the American Insurance Association. And a great many of these are the result of plain carelessness.

The American Insurance Association recommends a periodic check of appliances to see that they are in good repair and that cords are not worn or frayed. Any repairs or extension of wiring should be done by a qualified electrician.

When buvind new appliances or electrical’ cords, look for the Underwriters Laboratories label on the product, the American Insurance Association advises.
