This means there will be about 1,125,000 hogs on Virginia farms by 1975. Old Dominion swine producers are in a very enviable position in many ways. The eastern areas of the state are well adapted to grain production and therefore most suited to growing hogs. These areas are also closest to the concentrations of population on the eastern seaboard and thus Virginia packers are close to their markets. Continued population growth in these areas will make the marketing picture even brighter. In addition to the bright prospects for a slaughter hog production in Virginia, the growing of feeder pigs offers many opportunities. The production of feeder pigs is quite suitable to the management and feed production capabilities of many Virginia farms.
