Virginia hog producers must realize that the route to improved market hogs and feeder pigs is through improved breeding stock. Progressive purebred swine producers in Virginia are making available, in increasingly greater numbers, commercial boars that will sire "meat- type" offspring. Commercial producers must be willing to pay a fair price to obtain these superior sires for their herds. If Virginia hog producers are to grow and remain competitive in their business of producing hams, bacon and pork chops for thousands of American tables, their growth must be based on quality. Virginia hogs of the future must be longer, leaner, have bigger pork chops and plumper hams. They must be more efficient, using , less feed to produce more port so it can be sold at a competitive price
