Announces ’65 Funds
The State Highway Commission today announced the distribution to counties of $55,002,579 in secondary highway funds for the fiscal year beginning July 1, 1965. The total includes $50,365,297 in state funds and $4 637282 in secondary federal-aid or its equivalent. All funds are distributed to the counties as provided by statute. The 41,595 mile secondary system in 94 of the state’s 96 counties receives 33 per cent of all net road funds exclusive of Federal Interstate Funds. Arlington and Henrico Counties, which are not in the secondary system, maintain their own local roads and receive their funds under different formulas. Of the total allocation,) $38,640,000 is distributed to the counties on a four-factor' basis of area, population, road mileage and vehicle miles of travel, using the revised population figures furnished by Dr. Lorin A. Thompson, Director, Bureau of Population and Economic Research, University of Virginia, Charlottesville. Funds of $6,206,209accruing as a result of the motor vehicle tax increase of 1964 are distributed ort a long-range needs basis for the secondary highway network. Federal-aid or its equivalent and statematching funds of $8,879,196 are allocated on a three-factor basis of area, population and road mileage.
