RAM SALES have been reduced in number by the Virginia Purebred Sheep Breeders Association. This year only two sales will be held in the Valley of the North ern Virginia area: at Staunton July 14th and Harrisonburg on July 22nd. The Performance Tested ram sale will be held at Steeles Tavern on June 25th
* * * * * * * * * * ATTEND FIELD DAY. The Herberts of Flint Hill, Foster and Barksdale, Earl Kilby, Cleveland Ramey and your scribe attended the Op chardgrass Seed Production Field Day held last Wednesday in Fauquier County. No doubt different phases of the program proved most impressive to different people; to me however, I was most impressed by changes in harvest ing methods and some economic analysis made by Easley Smith of the VPI Agricultural Engineering Department.
Assuming 50 acres of op chardgrass to be harvested the binder - thresher - five men combination proved the cheapest @ a 38p per bushel harvesting cost. With 100 acres or more of seed to be harvested the modified binder pull combine combination proved cheapest @ 30£ a bushel. There were two methods of modifying old binders in such a manner that the orchardgrass was wlndrowed (losse) by these machines. I shall be happy to explain how this was done to anyone interested as such would require too much writing to suit me. As with many other crops, there is no best fertilization material nor-amountEto use.
With 0Mf'tMtlng»WdfM>+ in both phosphoric acid and potash, 300-400 pounds of a 3-18-18 (without borax) applied in the fall plus 40 to 90 lb^ of nitrogen applied per acre in the early spring would be about the proper ratios and amounts. In the swags, or low places, some lodging could be had from the higher rate of nitrogen, however you would be approaching optimum levels of fertilization.
