Dove O High This Season
Hunters bagged 4,113 doves on Game Commission managed dove fields in Eastern Virginia during September, according to R. H. Cross, Game Division Chief. This represent ed 6 half days of hunting during the month since these areas are only open for shooting on Wednesday and Saturday aftes noons. The first month’s kill on the seven areas opened for this type of shooting included 1,271 birds bagged on Camp Pickett, 1,150 downed on Elm Hill, 500 killed on A. P. Hill, 500 bagged on Kerr Reservoir fields, 315 taken at Quantico, 200 harvested on Cumberland Forest and 177 downed on Powhatan. “These harvest figures show a general improvement over the kill on these same areas during this period last year,” Cross said. All of these special dove fields will remain open to Wednesday and Saturday afternoon shooting through the first half of the split dove season which ends October 30. Dove shooting will be permitted on all afternoons during the last half of the split dove season December 20 through January 3 on all of these areas except Elm Hill.
