Dental Checkups
“The great discrepancy between the amount of dental care needed by the people of Virginia and the amount actually being sought and received has created an enormous backlog of dental disease,* stated Dr. Peter A. Triani, Director of the State Health Department’s Division of Dental Health. Dr. Triani’s statement is contained in the recent issue of the Virginia Health Bulletin which covers dental health problems as they exist today in Virginia and the program the State Health Department is operating in co-operation with the State Dental Association to help combat dental disease. Aimed principally at children, the Department’s program is primarily clinical work with the long range purpose of educating children to a lifetime of good dental health habits. “We are using 35 full-time public health dentists to provide dental treatment to geographically isolated and medically indigent children of the State, as well as patients who are chronically ill. However, in addition to treatment, we are emphasizing prevention of dental disease by adjusting fluoride content of public water supplies to the optimum level, encouraging dental inspections, including cleanings, topical fluoride treatments, proper brushing after meals and restrictive carbohydrate diets,* said Dr. Triani.
