VENEERS There’s a world of difference between the veneers of the 1920’s and the modern version, says Miss Katherine Habel, home furnishings specialist at Virginia Tech.
The early veneers were glued rather than bonded, using material which was neither heat or water resistant. Today’s consist of five or more layers around a core of hardwood. On one side, a carefully selected face veneer of fine figured hardwood is placed over the first layer, opposite the grain direction of the first.
Sandwiching layers with grain running in alternating directions equalizes stress. The "club sandwich" of layers is laminated together with adhesives. Finally, it is put in a heated press for an enduring bond.
Most all the larger flat visible furniture surfaces, such as tops, front, ends, cabinet doors, are now made with veneers. This is also true of visible surfaces, which are curved. Legs and other parts which must be shaped by turning on a lathe, or which are1 carved, are made from solid wood.
Advantages of modern veneers are numerous. Tests prove that veneers are far more resistant to warpingand splitting. Because plywood has been almost dehydrated by natural and artificial methods it is less likely to shrink or swell. It equalizes the stress and strain, thereby insuring greater strength.
Veneers also give greater beauty to furniture than was possible before. Wood matching, contrasts, bandings, ove* lay, inlays . . all the exciting effects you see on furniture are possible because of veneers. An infinite variety of interesting and at times exotic patterns are available because veneer sheets are thin and many may be cut from different sections of the tree.
Among the most important advantage of veneer is its price. Veneers bring the beauty of fine hardwood into every price range. Without veneers,' the cost of such beauty would be prohibitive to most people. HINTS
Escaping gas is dangerous. To stop a sudden gas pipe leak, promptly moisten a cake of soap and press it tightjy over the broken spot. The soap will harden enough to stay safely in place temporarily. Then call the gas man to make permanent repairs.
