Employees of The Potomac Edison Company this week received a first-place award in the National Safety Council’s annual safety contest for public utility companies. Competing with 23 other utilities of approximately the same size throughout the country, PE employees in 1965 recorded a safety performance substantially better than their nearest competitor, and ranked well above the national average for all utility companies.
For their size company, PE registered a frequency rate of .86 while the average for that group was 3.75. (The frequency rate is the number of lost-time injuries for each million manhours worked.) The over-all national frequency rate in 1965 was 5.01. The National Safety Council award was presented to PE President Charles D. Lyon by Earl W. Smith, managing director of the Baltimore Safety Council. Mr. Smith told the gathering that 'few utilities in the entire country completed 1965 with such an impressive accomplishment. You have a right to be proud of this award and the record it represents.
