A child with a serious speech defect is living in a ‘communication vacuum* in which his full learning and social potential can seldom be developed, Dr. William T. Sanger, of Richmond and Campaign Chairman for the Virginia Society for Crippled Children and Adults, said here. He estimated that over 40,000 school age children in Virginia have speech problems serious enough to need expert help. And he emphasized that help is available. Almost two million children in the United States have such speech defects as stuttering, cleft lip and palate, and difficulty caused by cerebral palsy, aphasia, h e a r i n g loss, minimal brain injury, and other conditions. "Most of us take the precious gift of speech for granted,* Dr. Sanger said. “But without it a child is living in a communication vacuum. A boy or girl with a serious speech problem if in some ways worse off than a youngster who is missing an arm or leg. There are compensations for the latter disability; whereas without speech, learn ing and social potential can seldom be developed." Dr. Sanger said the Easter Seal Society is one of the leaders in bringing corrective treatment to children with speech disorders. Last year over 4500 children and adults with speech' defects were treated in Virginia. These services were financed largely by the Easter Seal Campaign, which is now in progress and continues until April 10, Easter Sunday. Dr. Sanger recommended early treatment and therapy under professional direction for all children with speech handicaps.
