Spring Forest Fires

Burn 5,518 Acres

Forest fires usually occur in abundance during the spring months and the past months were not exceptional. A total of 1,147 forest fires occurred within the State during January, February, March, and April and destroyed approximately 5,518 acres of timber and game land. According to R. M. Johnson, Chief Forest Warden of Rappahannock coun ty, there have been 2 forest fires in the county so far this year. While the number of forest fires that occurred were many the acres lost were below normal considering the type of weather we experienced. Woodlands were exceptionally dry but factors such as low temperature and cool, low velocity winds were helpful during forest fire control activities.
