The executive director of the association said that more than 12,000 died of emphysema in a recent 12-month period and concern for those with the disease has been one of the major projects of the organization during the past year. It was explained that emphysema cripples the breathing apparatus by breaking dowr the air-sacs of the lungs. It makes breathing more and more difficult - sometimes impossible. Its chief symptom is unusual shortness of breath Chronic cough may be another. Particular attention is being directed to men over 45 whose lungs have “taken a beating" through frequent coughs or other stresses and abuses. Most of them have smoked cigaretts heavily for years. Almost one-hundred industries are included in the health education program.
