Th* use of 'electricity has grown rapidly, particularly in the last few years, in most homes and on farms. Today adequate electrical wiring is essential in the borne. Yet, perhaps because wiring is hidden, it is often overlooked in building and remodeling plans. Though hidden, its importance can t be overemphasized. The efficient and safe operation of all electrical appliances and equipment depends on it, says Harold R. Lezotte of the Virginia Farm and Home Electrification Council.
To see if your wiring is adequate, you should check three things. One thing is the electric service entrance, commonly called the switch or fuse box. The service entrance must be large enough for two reasons. First, it must have a capacity large enough to handle electrical needs of the home. Second, it needs to provide enough circuits so all necessary wiring can be connected. In most modern homes says Lezotte, a service entrance with a 100-ampere current capacity is the minimum. The second thing is to see that a separate circuit from the service entrance is provided for all major electrical appliances and special equipment. Major appliances include a water pump, furnace, automatic clothes washer, air conditioner, freezer, dish washer, garbage disposal and refrigerator.
