■ Com hybrid demonstrations have been planted with six cooperating farmers. Most of the seed was furnished by seedsmen cooperating with George W. Hawkins. Extension Seed Specialist. Other hybrids purchased by co-operating farmers were added making a total of thirty-four. The demonstrators include: Clifton Clerk of Woodville, Earl Kilby - F. T., Mount Vernon of Sperryville, Jonas Jenkins of Wash ington, Herbert Foster of Flint HiU* Jim Massie, who lives on 729 and Charlie Compton of Amiss ville. Among the hybrids included are three Southern States corns. one VPI, seven Pioneers, one Taylor A Evans, four Funks, eight DeKalbe, two PAG’s, two Thompsons, two Crib Fillers, and one each of Hofmyer and Ohio and Michigan. Each demonstration's location lends toward feasibility of holding a Corn Field Day in late August. Purposes of the demonstration include learning more about local adaptability of Hybrids tested at Research Stations, and learning about newer hybrids Just on the market. Also, it is hoped the demonstrations will reveal varieties more profitable to produce.
Cutworms are proving a problem in several areas of die county. Hie heaviest infestation being reported and seen at George Beahms, where as many as sixty larvae were found in one potato hill. Control measures in most planted gardens may be had by placing a collar around the plants. The only chemical control listed among approved labeled pesticides is 2-4 lbs. per acre of Diazinon crystals applied prior to planting, disced into the soil and undisturbed for 3-4 days.
