The Piedmont Board of Realtors, comprising members from Orange, Madison, Rappahannock and Culpeper Counties, are observing National Realtors Week May 22-28. Officials of the group are Col. George F. Ashworth, president. Orange; Joseph T. Samuels, secretary, Orange; and Otis L. Burke, Culpeper, public relations chairman. The board is composed of 14 members from the four counties.
A realtor is a professional in real estate who subscribes to a strict code of ethics as a member of the local board and of the National Association of Real Estate Boards. About 60 years ago a group of men became alarmed at the lack of standards in the real estate business and banded together to establish an association that would establish professional stands of practice. The association, founded in 1908, is called the National Association of Real Estate Boards and comprises 82,000 realtors and 1500 local real estate boards. Realtors in 1917 achieved the adoption of the first state license law for real estate brokers and have been the motivating force in the adoption by all 50 states of these laws. Half a century ago, no college taught real estate ir a course, while today more than 220 institutions of learning offer such courses. In pursuit of its goal to make home ownership available to the widest number of Americans, the National Association has worked for programs to foster this end.
