we were in the battle of Fredericksburg, but suffered very little as we had an easy placq the only one we ever had. A part of Gen. Lee’s line of battle was somewhat in the shape of a horseshoe and our brigade was at the toe; so we only had some shells to con$pnd with*. .. .. But now comes the trying time. The battle of Gettysburg was fought the 1st, 2nd and 3rd of July '63. Pickett’s division made its famous charge on the 3rd, and a more gallant charge I have never read of. As I did not do any of the fighting myself, I think I can with propriety praise those who did. My position gave me an opportunity to see the conduct of others. I saw no man out of place until he was shot. I think their order was equal to that of dress parade. I was on foot, the first time I ever went into battle on foot. Col. Hunton wanted my horse as his horse was fractious. My position, as courier, was beside Col. Hunton and his position was about forty yeards in the rear of the center of his regiment. I could see all along the line. We had not gone more than half the distance to the stone wall, when Col. Hunton was wounded and I had to go off the field with him, which kept me out of the worst of the charge. The ball that went through Col. Hunton's leg went through my
