Students Attend Conf.
Thirty-one young adults representing seven high schools in the area met recently at thfe Luray High School for a conference on "Smoke Signals", believed to be the first of this type in Virginia. Sponsored by the Tuberculosis & Health Association of Northern Virginia, the young adult group met to discuss methods of presenting the facts on cigaret smoking to high school and elementary students so they may make an intelligent decision as to whether or not to smoke. Mason C. Lockridge, Jr., Physical Education teacher and coach, Luray High School served as Chairman of the Planning Committee. With Richard Sedwick of Luray High School as Conference Moderator "Point of View" a film produced by the National Tuberculosis Association was previewed. Participating in the panel discussion, which followed were Sam Guza, III of Richmond, who discussed "Why I smoked"; Ellen Hottle, Strasburg High, “Why I do not smoke"; Violet Jackson, Douglass High (Leesburg) explained "How adult habits, affect student attitudes"; Carolyn Ellis, Luray High, "Isa student concerned about future health?"; Richard Browning, Fauquier High, "Does a student smoking area encourage smoking?"; Robert Pullen, Jr. Handley High, “What is important in social life?”; and Chris Harper, Frederick County Junior High, "Why Ido not plan to smoke". The panel was moderatecf by William Johns of Warren County High. After lunch Rolfe White of Warren County High moderated a discussion on methods of presentation to students by students.
