Hunton told me to crawl out close to them and find out if they were friends of foes. 1 did so and found they were friends, but I was careful not to make any noise. It being a very dark night, they might mistake me for an enemy and shoot at me and then my own men would return the fire and I would be caught between the two. We had no engagement that night but were in battle the 30th. I think it was on the Chinn farm where we fought. We were advancing on the enemy, had driven in their skirmish line, when we discovered a command of the enemy on our left, nearer to us than those in front; so we had to change front and fight thos$ nearest to us. Just before our command changed front, 1 saw several men behind some large trees. I stopped to get them out. One of them showed me his feet; they were bleeding from being scratched by briars. He had no sboes. I said I, knew it was hard but that was no time to think about sore feet. He said he would go on and he went running to overtake the command. I got out all but one who would not go. After leaving him I found two men in a pond of water. They were Yankees. I took them back to the man that would not go forward and asked him if he would take the two prisoners to the rear. He said he would and he did. I started across the field to Join my command; but seeing some men lying in a gully, I went after them and asked what they were doing there. They said they did not know where their command was. One of them had a flag. I told him that the gully was no place for a Confederate
