Hunt Accidents Already Equal Last Years Total
Virginia hunting accidents have already equaled last year’s unwelcome total of- 69 with several weeks of hunting yet remaining in the 1970-71 season, reports Game Commission Safety Office, J. N. Kerrick. Of the 72 persons injured in these mishaps, 12 died as a result of their wounds as compared with 8 the previous year. Victims mistaken for game or moving into other hunter’s line of fire led the list of casualties. Careless gun handling, as usual, accounted for nearly half of the accidents. Falling with loaded guns, snagging triggers on brush and inserting or removing loaded guns from vehicles were common examples.
The accidents were almost evenly divided between big game and small game hunters. Shotguns were the weapon involved in the vast majority. Many of the mishaps involving younger hunters reflect lack of experience in handling firearms and in identifying game in the field.
