those “little country schools’’ and where they were: “Let’s see, there were two schools over at Flint Hill, and two down in Washington, one at Huntly and let me think...Was there one over at Belle Meade? Some went only up to the fifth grade, you know.”
DRIVING conditions were different then, and a bit worse Mutt said. “Now people worry about a school bus having to go over dirt roads in the winter. They forget what we had to get through then.”
Mutt talked about mud, mud that came after the first snow started melting, and got rained on, and got snowed on again so that it stayed most of the winter.
“I never recall a bus not making it to school because of the mud and of course we didn’t cancel school for it. It just meant that we had to keep chains on the buses most of the winter.”
Mutt has seen the buses grow. “The first buses we had, those with a real body, carried around 32. Then they went to 48, then 54, then 60 and now 66.”
