I like that quotation, but let’s examine it a little more closely. Gateway, that which, gives access. So, we have access to a new year. Then gateway is a location, such as gateway to the west, north, or south. Let us just say that the gateway into the future might lead in many directions.
When does the new year actually begin? Calendars have been changed many times sq, is the calendar year the beginning of the year for you? Some think of their new year beginning on the anniversary of their natal day, some from the time they met that certain someone. It seems more logical that the new year' should begin at the time of the vernal equinox, as it once did.
