Missing man found dead
HILTON WHARTON, who had been missing from his home at Castleton since mid-December, was found dead Sunday, lying in a creek bed in the Castleton area. He was 61. The body was discovered by John Daley, a nearby resident who was out walking, and he alerted the State Police Department.
Wharton was last seen December 13, as well as could be ascertained by Trooper R. A. Baines, who was not assigned to the case until December 21. An intensive search by rescue squads and area residents took place December 28 without success.
According to the medical examiner’s findings, Wharton died of a coronary occlusion. He had apparently climbed a tree on the creek bank and fell out. The examination disclosed a fractured thigh bone, said Trooper Baines, who also stated that the man’s coat was found hanging about 20 feet up in a pine tree. The branches of the tree were broken off, indicating he had fallen directly down into the creek. (An obituary notice is printed elsewhere.)□
