CLYDE ATKINS has been called “Mutt” since he was ‘‘quite young.”
“I used to go to baseball practice when I was too little to play. I was just watching one time and someone called, ‘Hey, you little Mutt.’ I remember the day just as well, and where it was. We used to have a baseball diamond over where Donald Gore now lives. The field was owned by J. Walton Wood.”
Mutt built a new house about three years ago on Route 211, past Sperryville up toward Panorama. He has a therometer nailed on the front porch post facing the door.
“I can come to the door in the dark and shine my flashlight out there and tell how cold it is.”
Perhaps he also looks to see if it’s “spittin’ snow.” And he knows, earlier than anyone else, if the Rappahannock County school buses will run.D
