Mutt remembered the day he told Charlie Thomas on his first day of school to quit running up and down the aisle. “You know, he’s been awarded a scholarship to college down in Florida for running track,” Mutt noted proudly. “Charlie sat down behind me and started crying and I asked him why. He was scared I’d tell his daddy. I told him I wouldn’t tell his daddy, i only wanted to keep him from hurting himself. I never had a bit more trouble from him. That wouldn’t anymore worry a kid now.”
Mutt first served as Supervisor: of Transportation for the'schools shortly before his brother died. But he gave it up after James’ death and just drove the bus. When O.A. Norton became supervisor, Mutt was asked to come back to help. “I told him I’d just come for a year. But that was about 12 years ago and I didn’t retire until last summer.”
