Cox told the Rappahannock Supervisors that his jail was also used for prisoners outside Rappahannock and Fauquier. “Just this morning, federal marshalls called me to ask how much space I had. And we regularly keep prisoners from Fairfax, Prince William, the State Penitentiary. We’re all bulging.”
“What are we going to do when he (Sheriff Cox) doesn’t have room?” Herbert Foster asked of Gibbs.
“We are tight everywhere; he’s right. But as long as the prisoner is on a state charge, the state will take responsibility for finding room,” Giles said. He went on to talk about the rising expenses confronting his department.
Jenkins noted that he would have to find a new jailer, to live in the jail, since Ronnie Hawkins is resigning as jailer. And he reminded the Supervisors again that he could have hired two additional deputies earlier, even without the Supervisors’ approval.
