RAPPAHANNOCK’S Sheriff John Walker Jenkins told the Supervisors he had two things to discuss with them at their meeting last Thursday—his “present situation,” and a regional jail. The “present situation” needed immediate attention, the sheriff said.
Jenkins told the Supervisors that the Rappahannock County jail is currently operating contrary to state standards. Mr. Gibbs, state superintendent for jails, was present to answer Supervisors’ questions about new state standards.
“We are operating now as a jail, but the rules have gotten so strict that we can’t operate as a jail any more,” Sheriff Jenkins began. “But the rules are more lenient if you operate as a lockup instead of a jail.
