“I’m sure you will get a public hearing,” Askew said.
“Well, I want to make sure we get it,” Luke said. “We don’t want them to do like they did with 1-66.” The Supervisors agreed to go on record requesting a public hearing.
THE SUPERVISORS discussed two bids they’d received for the job of covering over the Amissville dump with one foot of soil. One bid was $5,700 and the other $5,800. Supervisors Herbert Foster and H.B. Wood thought the bids seemed a bit high, and suggested they be re-advertised.
“They won’t seem high when we get a lawsuit from the adjoining property owners who want it cleaned up right away,” J.R. Latham said. George Davis and clerk Ned Jones doubted that the Supervisors could get the job done for less than the bids already offered.
But the Supervisors, all except Latham, voted to re-advertise. The two who already applied for the job are invited to submit new bids.
Luke said that a member of the state legislature was proposing a study to see if school buses could be used for transportation in rural areas during the hours they weren’t used for transporting school children. “To transport who?” Herbert Foster asked.
“The people of this county,” Luke said, “elderly people who need to get places, things like that.”
