It we try to operate as a jail, with the new state standards, we’d need four or five more correctional officers. And you know as well as I do, we don’t have enough prisoners in the Rappahannock County jail to hire that many people.” John Walker Jenkins said. ‘‘If we become a lock-up we’d only need one more deputy.”
In a ‘‘lock-up,” the prisoners are only held for a maximum of 24 hours before being transferred to a jail—probably, in Rappahannock’s case, to Fauquier County. Sheriff Jenkins said an extra deputy would be necessary under the lock-up program in order for someone to remain on duty at the Rappahannock jail and refer calls while the other deputy transferred a prisoner to Warrenton. During the time a prisoner is detained in the lock-up, he must have constant supervision, with cell checks every 30 minutes, Jenkins added.
